The second generation Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 are two of the hottest smaller Android tablets on the market. The Nexus 7 brings strong value and a promise of quick OS updates while the Galaxy Note 8.0 has its digital S Pen for precise drawing and writing and Samsung’s very useful software customizations. The Nexus 7 is several months younger than the Note 8.0 and less expensive at $229 for the 16 gig WiFi model vs. the $399 list price for the Samsung 16 gig WiFi model (though you may find it for less on sale).

Display

The Note 8.0’s slightly larger screen does make for a better movie watching experience, but the Nexus 7 strikes back with a higher pixel density display that’s extremely sharp. Colors are richer on the Samsung, while fine text detail is much sharper on the Nexus 7 with it’s full HD 1920 x 1200 display. Both have wide viewing angles.

Performance and Horsepower

Both tablets feature fast quad core CPUs, and the somewhat newer CPU in the 2013 Nexus 7 edges the Galaxy Note 8.0 in synthetic benchmarks. That said, the CPU and GPU have to push a lot more pixels on the Nexus 7, so it needs that added horsepower. The Nexus 7 is superb for gaming, but the Note 8.0 is no slouch and is still one of the fastest 7-8 inch tablets on the market.

Expansion

Google hates card slots, thus there’s no microSD card slot on the Nexus 7. Though it supports USB host, Google didn’t include the necessary drivers for mass storage devices (see, they really hate removable storage). You can use Nexus Media Importer to bring support for USB flash drives and hard drives. That app is available on Google Play and costs a dollar or two.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has a microSD card slot that supports SDXC high capacity cards and it has USB host as well. In either case, you’ll need a micro USB to USB OTG host adapter cable to use USB peripherals.
